Gluehwein (Glühwein) is a German winter-holiday drink, made with red wine and spiced with cinnamon sticks, cloves, star aniseed, citrus and sugar and is served warm or hot. Glühwein mugs are believed to have originated around the year 1420 from Count John IV of Katzenelnbogen, a German nobleman, beginning a centuries-old tradition.
